Facets
Miniskirts for
the husband, business suit for the boss, and twinset for mom? Only
gray suits, blue shirts and red tie for business? It is rare to
find a person who chooses clothes only to satisfy herself. Is it
possible to preserve the individual style and please others? A crystallized
image of ourselves is a trap. There are more facets of ourselves
in each one of us than you imagine. To be in touch with them can
make life more pleasant and more adventurous.
Clothes are the visible
part of the self, or better, of a part of the self. Clothes are
the words and style is our individual way of expressing ourselves.
Every time we dress we invent ourselves. Clothes provide others
with clues on our personality, can diminish or increase the degree
of intelligence, of success, of being desirable, of being personal.
Our way of dressing can also attract the persons who dress in a
similar way. When we know exactly which clothes and colors we need
wear and which to avoid, we have a good piece of the know how that
enables us to emphasize certain characteristics and improve the
whole look.
Consistency
It’s important
to have consistency in all the elements of the image. The power
of the principle of consistency has been largely studied by sychologists,
and it’s a potent weapon of social influence. If all the clues we
supply are consistent among them, they become valid and our image
will be perceived favourably. What's more, our style will be a very clear
indication of our individuality. Clothes, therefore, help us play the part.
Power
In essence, to
know how to dress projects power, power to face the world, to conform
or to stand out, to manipulate what others think of us. Even if
the choices we make can be influenced by the work, the husband,
wife, boyfriend or by other people, what’s really important is to
dress to please ourselves.
Let's analyse in detail
each of the elements:
